As Co-Founder of <\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"IntuiTap Medical (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intuitapmedical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>IntuiTap Medical<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yasharganjeh\/\"><em>Dr. Yashar Ganjeh<\/em><\/a><em> engineered a device to make spinal needle placement more precise and less painful. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tell us about your research&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am the Principle Investigator on a <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfund.nsf.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">National Science Foundation SBIR<\/a> project titled <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sbir.gov\/sbirsearch\/detail\/1584781\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTactile sensing for spinal-needle placements\u201d<\/a>, which my startup, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"IntuiTap Medical (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intuitapmedical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">IntuiTap Medical<\/a>, was granted recently. We are developing a handheld medical device for performing spinal needle placements, such as epidurals in anesthesiology and spinal taps in emergency medicine and neurology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We are developing a handheld medical device for performing spinal needle placements, such as epidurals in anesthesiology and spinal taps in emergency medicine and neurology. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Our device uses an array of tactile sensors that when placed against patient\u2019s back, gives an image of underlying vertebrae, showing physicians the gap between the two vertebrae, where they need to place a spinal needle. Our handheld device uses passive sensors that require no waves, ultrasound or magnetic, to image the lumbar anatomy. We use tactile sensors to measure force applied to patient\u2019s back and generate a 2D image of underlying anatomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Currently, the physicians use their sense of touch to find a dime-size opening between patients\u2019 vertebrae to insert a needle. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The image looks like what you see on a stud finder but for your spine! Post puncture headaches are the most common source of lawsuits for anesthesiologists. In ER and neurology, failed attempts result in radiology referrals so the procedure can be done under X-ray.
