Formerly a specialized nanotechnology company focused on graphene production and dispersion, Applied Graphene Materials is now part of Universal Matter, operating as Universal Matter GBR Ltd.
Applied Graphene Materials, founded in 2010 and headquartered in Redcar, United Kingdom, was a nanotechnology company specializing in the research, development, and manufacture of graphene nanoplatelets and dispersions. The company developed proprietary techniques to incorporate graphene into various composite and polymer systems, coatings, and functional fluids. By focusing on dispersion and product integration expertise, the company provided high-performance material solutions designed to enhance industrial products across sectors including lubricants, thermal management, energy storage, and advanced industrial coatings.
In March 2023, the main operating subsidiaries of Applied Graphene Materials were acquired by the Canadian high-tech advanced materials firm Universal Matter. Following this acquisition, the business has rebranded as Universal Matter GBR Ltd. This integration leverages the established application and dispersion capabilities developed by the former Applied Graphene Materials team to support the growth of Universal Matter’s broader portfolio, which utilizes a proprietary Flash Joule Heating process to produce sustainable graphene materials from various carbon-based feedstocks.
