Circelec is a Swiss company developing sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable electronic components, including RFID tags and circuit boards, using additive manufacturing to reduce global electronic waste.
Circelec is a Swiss technology company founded in 2024 that specializes in the development of sustainable, recyclable, and compostable electronics. Emerging from PhD research at EPFL’s Soft Transducers Lab (LMTS), the company utilizes patent-pending additive manufacturing processes to print zinc circuits onto paper or biopolymeric substrates. This innovative approach offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional electronics manufacturing, which typically relies on non-biodegradable materials and hazardous chemicals that contribute to global electronic waste. Their current product focus includes the development of eco-friendly RFID tags and cards, with plans to expand into the broader circuit board market.
By creating biodegradable solutions, Circelec aims to address the significant environmental challenge posed by the millions of tons of electronic waste generated annually, of which only a small fraction is currently recycled. The technology is designed to support the growing demand for sustainable IoT devices and electronic components. Supported by funding from the Foundation for Technological Innovation (FIT) and recognized by various accelerators, the company is actively advancing its research and development to produce increasingly complex and functional circuit board solutions for a circular economy.
