INERA is the primary public research institute in Burkina Faso responsible for formulating and coordinating national agricultural and environmental research to support sustainable development and food security.
The Institut de l’Environnement et de Recherches Agricoles (INERA) is a specialized public research institute based in Burkina Faso. As one of the four institutes under the National Center for Scientific and Technological Research (CNRST), it is mandated to formulate, implement, and coordinate national research programs in agriculture and the environment. INERA organizes its activities into scientific departments focusing on areas such as natural resource management, vegetal production, cattle breeding, and forestry. It utilizes a regionalized approach to conduct studies, develop technologies, and provide technical support to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical agricultural and environmental development.
The institute serves as a critical partner for national and international development by providing expertise and innovation to improve food security and sustainable resource management. With a staff of over 380 researchers covering disciplines ranging from agronomy and soil science to sociology and nutrition, INERA supports the transfer of research results to producers, students, and technical stakeholders. Its work contributes to the professionalization of the agricultural sector, the promotion of sustainable land use, and the implementation of large-scale scientific cooperation projects aimed at regional development and poverty reduction.
