MechSyn is a deep tech startup specializing in scalable mechanochemical material synthesis. It provides energy-efficient, solvent-free production processes to help chemical, energy, and electronics industries reduce emissions and costs.
MechSyn is a German deep tech startup that specializes in mechanochemistry, an innovative solid-state synthesis method that utilizes mechanical force instead of traditional high-temperature, high-pressure, or solvent-based chemical processes [1, 5, 8]. By using customized ball mills to transfer mechanical energy, the company produces high-performance materials and catalysts while operating at room temperature and standard pressure [1, 5]. This approach is designed to be energy-efficient, scalable, and environmentally friendly, with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional synthesis methods [3, 5, 8]. Born as a spin-off from the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr, MechSyn is led by a team of scientists and engineers dedicated to transitioning scientific research into industrial reality [1, 3, 4, 7].
The company provides solutions to critical industries—including chemicals, energy, electronics, and e-mobility—that face pressure to improve material performance while meeting net-zero emission targets [3, 5, 8]. By developing scalable production technologies and IP infrastructure, MechSyn helps partners create better products, lower costs, and establish more sustainable, circular supply chains [1, 6, 8]. The startup has received support from the EXIST-Forschungstransfer program and is engaged in building industrial-scale prototypes, such as automated mechanochemical units, to replace legacy production infrastructure [3, 4, 6, 8]. Through these efforts, MechSyn aims to establish mechanochemistry as a key enabling technology for climate-neutral manufacturing [6, 8].
