qortein

Qortein is an Israeli FoodTech company that specializes in processing jellyfish biomass into sustainable, nutrient-rich ingredients for the food, nutraceutical, and nutricosmetics industries. The company utilizes a patented, technology-protected extraction process developed at Tel Aviv University by Prof. Shachar Richter. By applying a combination of physical and enzymatic techniques, Qortein converts jellyfish—often considered an invasive nuisance—into functional proteins, collagen, and glycoproteins without the use of harsh chemicals. This approach preserves the bioactivity of the ingredients, which the company intends to supply for diverse applications, including sports nutrition, protein powders, and dietary supplements.

The company aims to address urgent global challenges such as food security, overfishing, and climate change by tapping into jellyfish as a renewable, abundant resource that promotes a blue economy. By sourcing jellyfish through a passive catch strategy during blooms, Qortein seeks to create an eco-friendly supply chain that reduces pressure on traditional marine ecosystems. Currently in the R&D phase, the company has secured support from the InNegev incubator and is working toward regulatory approvals, with plans to introduce these jellyfish-derived proteins to global markets as a high-value, sustainable alternative to conventional protein sources.
