Schism Bioworks

Schism Bioworks is a biotechnology company focused on developing next-generation probiotics to address limitations in the current market, which is dominated by traditional Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. The company specializes in the research and development of Propionibacterium freudenreichii P.UF1, a strain originally discovered in the fecal samples of preterm breastfed infants by researchers at the University of Florida. This strain is designed to offer high survivability through the digestive tract, superior stability at room temperature, and the ability to act as both a probiotic and a prebiotic by stimulating the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Furthermore, the company highlights that P.UF1 is a significant producer of vitamin B12, a nutrient required by the majority of gut bacteria but produced by only a small percentage.

By introducing P.UF1 into the probiotic landscape, Schism Bioworks aims to optimize gut microbiota diversity, which they argue is lacking in many commercial multi-strain products. The company focuses on the potential health benefits of this strain, particularly its role in early-life immune health. By providing a novel probiotic option, they target the need for more diverse and metabolically active solutions that can better support the human microbiome compared to first-generation probiotic offerings.
