Engineering RNA editing proteins to control translation in plants
About
I work with Ian Small at the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Plants for Space. I research a family of proteins in plants that are responsible for processes in chloroplast and mitochondria gene regulation. I look at nuclear gene expansions, molecular evolution, organelle genomes and transcriptomes, and use data to inform the rational design of synthetic RNA binding and RNA editing proteins. The goal in the context of the ARC centre is to engineer single-nucleotide resolution RNA editing enzymes to control translation, and use the chloroplast to produce valuable molecules.
