Biological valorization of difficult-to-recycle plastics, with a focus on mixed plastic waste. My laboratory uses bacterial consortia to break down plastic polymers and convert plastic-derived carbon into recoverable chemical products and fuels.
I'm looking for

Industry partners interested in testing biological approaches to plastic waste valorization, particularly multilayer flexible packaging, polyethylene, and mixed plastic. I am interested in sponsored research and technology development and co-development opportunities.
About
I am a professor at Reed College studying the biology of bacterial plastic degradation. Trained as a bacterial geneticist, my research investigates how microbial communities degrade polymers and metabolize plastic-derived carbon. Our laboratory has developed bacterial consortia capable of degrading PET and polyethylene and is investigating strategies to recover higher-value chemicals from plastic waste. Our work is supported by the National Science Foundation and the intellectual property surrounding the technology is patent protected.
