Reverse-osmosis desalination using covalent organic framework-polyamide nanocomposite membranes
About
We have developed new sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that upon introduction into a polyamide (PA) membrane resulted in a substantial increase in water permeance and noticeable decreased salt permeability. The COF is not simply a nanomaterial imbedded in the PA, rather it is covalently bonded within the PA. The new composite RO membrane was tested against FilmTec SW30HR and outperformed it with 12X the water permeability and slightly improving sodium chloride removal.
