This technology utilizes cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to create systems for controlled fragrance release, including CNC-stabilized emulsions, spray-dried powders, and core-shell filaments. These systems enhance fragrance stability and release, using sustainable, scalable methods.

Overview

This innovative platform leverages cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to develop advanced systems for the controlled release of fragrances and essential oils. The technology comprises CNC-stabilized emulsions, spray-dried oil powders, and core-shell filaments, offering versatile options for incorporating fragrances into topical formulations. These systems are designed to improve fragrance stability, retention, and controlled release, utilizing naturally derived materials that are petrolatum-free and suitable for scalable manufacturing.

Technical specifications
  • CNC-stabilized emulsions: These emulsions encapsulate fragrances or essential oils, facilitating direct use or conversion into dry powders via spray drying.
  • Spray-dried oil powders: Achieves over 90% encapsulation efficiency, providing storage stability for several weeks and easy redispersion with hand shaking.
  • Core-shell filaments: Created through coaxial wet spinning, these filaments encapsulate oils in methylcellulose-CNC structures, forming discrete bead-like reservoirs for enhanced fragrance retention.
  • Material compatibility: The platform supports a variety of oils, including corn, tea tree, turmeric, lavender, and jojoba, with potential applications in personal care products.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, this technology has demonstrated efficacy in laboratory settings, with established CNC-based formulations showing high oil encapsulation and stability. Future development will focus on optimizing fragrance loading and processing into spray-dried powders and wet-spun filaments, with planned evaluations in topical formulations for commercial applications.
