A next-generation atmospheric water generator (AWG) that extracts potable drinking water directly from humid air using refrigeration-based condensation. Building on 20 years of field experience and 3,200+ units deployed globally, this R&D initiative targets a 60%+ reduction in operating costs through cross-flow heat exchangers, inverter compressors, and improved cooling-coil design, lowering cost to $40–$75 per 1,000 gallons.

Overview

WaterMaker International is developing a more energy-efficient atmospheric water generator (AWG) capable of producing 250–5,000 liters of potable water per day directly from humid ambient air. Atmospheric water generators condense moisture from the air using refrigeration-based cooling, then filter and purify it to meet World Health Organization drinking water standards—eliminating the need for groundwater, piped supply, or transported bottled water.

With over two decades of commercial experience and more than 3,200 units deployed across 35+ countries, WaterMaker has validated the technology in real-world environments, including an extended test by a major U.S. beverage producer. Current models produce 3–4 liters of water per kWh, translating to operating costs of $104–$139 per 1,000 gallons at typical U.S. electricity rates. This project aims to reduce those costs by more than 60%, bringing the cost down to $40–$75 per 1,000 gallons and making AWG technology more economically viable for commercial, humanitarian, and off-grid applications in high-humidity regions.

Technical specifications

Targeted efficiency improvements:

  • Cross-flow heat exchanger (40% savings): Pre-cools incoming humid ambient air using the drier exhaust air leaving the evaporator, reducing the sensible heat load that the refrigeration system must remove to condense moisture
  • Inverter compressor (10–15% savings): Allows variable-speed operation matched to real-time water demand and fluctuations in inlet air temperature and humidity, rather than fixed-speed cycling
  • Improved cooling-coil design (5–10% savings): Enhanced heat-transfer surface geometry and refrigerant flow characteristics
  • Better gasketing and sealing (2–10% savings): Reduces internal air leaks that force the compressor to work harder

Key product features:

  • Capacity range from 25 liters to over 5,000 liters per day
  • Produces pure drinking water meeting WHO standards without requiring an external water source
  • Refrigeration-based condensation with integrated purification
  • Validated prototype demonstrated 37% power savings in early testing; a customer purchased the prototype directly after evaluation
  • Inverter-driven operation enables stable performance under more extreme outdoor temperature and humidity conditions
Technology readiness level

The underlying AWG technology is commercially mature, with thousands of units sold and in operation across diverse climates. A 100-liter-per-day prototype incorporating the cross-flow heat exchanger concept has already been built and field-tested, demonstrating a 37% reduction in power consumption compared with conventional AWG designs. The proposed project advances the technology from this validated prototype toward a 500-liter-per-day optimized unit that integrates all four efficiency improvements simultaneously. The work represents applied engineering optimization rather than fundamental research, positioning the technology for rapid commercial scaling once the combined efficiency targets are confirmed.

About WaterMaker International, LLC

WaterMaker (India) Pvt. Ltd. designs, manufactures, and markets atmospheric water generators (AWGs) that produce pure drinking water directly from the air. Utilizing refrigeration techniques, these machines condense, purify, and dispense water without requiring an external water source. The company acts as the exclusive licensee for AirWater Corporation (USA) and offers a diverse range of systems capable of generating from 25 liters to over 5,000 liters of water daily. The technology is optimized for operation in regions with high humidity and is designed to meet World Health Organization standards for water quality.

The company serves various global markets, including India, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, focusing on both commercial distribution and social impact initiatives. Through corporate social responsibility projects, such as installing water stations in rural Indian villages, WaterMaker India addresses critical needs for safe, accessible drinking water in areas where ground water is scarce or contaminated. Their solutions are utilized by NGOs, local authorities, and private entities to provide clean water in schools, communities, and public spaces. The organization emphasizes sustainable growth and is actively working toward integrating renewable energy sources to power its water generation systems.
