Company

CuanTec offers chitosan and chitosan derivative technology for convenient, sustainable laundry detergent delivery. Applications include water-soluble single-dose sachets and tablet binders, with proven fast dissolution, antimicrobial synergy, and full home-compost biodegradability within 8 weeks.

Overview

CuanTec is developing chitosan and chitosan derivative materials as a sustainable solution for convenient laundry detergent delivery. Chitosan is an abundant biopolymer extracted from chitin recovered from waste food streams, offering a renewable alternative to petroleum-based packaging. The technology enables two key product formats: water-soluble films for compact single-dose detergent sachets, and chitosan as a binder for powdered or tableted laundry detergent formulations. In addition to its delivery and binding functions, chitosan contributes antimicrobial properties, adding a secondary functional benefit to the detergent system. The combined profile of biodegradability, fast dissolution, and formulation flexibility positions this as a compelling sustainable alternative for household cleaning product manufacturers.

Technical specifications

Key features and demonstrated capabilities:

  • Water-soluble chitosan films dissolve in under one minute, mimicking the conditions of a standard laundry wash cycle
  • Prototype film thicknesses ranging from 15 to 70 micrometers do not affect dissolution time, providing manufacturing flexibility
  • Sachets are lipophilic, enabling encapsulation of non-aqueous detergent formulations as single doses
  • Chitosan used as a paper pulp binder increased mechanical strength up to 7-fold compared to pure ground pulp, indicating strong potential as a binder for tableted detergent products
  • Chitosan dispersed in acidic medium demonstrates synergistic antimicrobial effects with low pH, extending cidal efficacy
  • Films achieved full degradation in a home composting bin within 8 weeks
  • Chitosan is sourced from waste food streams, supporting a circular bioeconomy approach
Technology readiness level

The technology has been validated at prototype scale. CuanTec has manufactured soluble detergent sachets from chitosan and successfully filled them with dry, non-aqueous commercial detergents. These prototypes demonstrated stability during storage and rapid dissolution when introduced to water. Initial biodegradability assessment has been completed via home composting, and binder performance has been demonstrated in paper pulp systems. CuanTec's chitosan manufacturing plant is scheduled to open in 2023, which will enable sourcing of the quantities required for larger-scale projects. Future validation work will focus on addressing compatibility with a wider range of detergent formulations, supported by wet-chemistry techniques and mechanical testing capabilities.
