Salivasens: oral-care-integrated electrochemical platform for saliva biomarker monitoring

SalivaSens is a non-invasive electrochemical biosensing platform being developed by VitalSens to make repeated saliva biomarker measurement practical outside conventional laboratories. The platform is designed to integrate biological sampling into a familiar oral-care routine, reducing the inconvenience and poor adherence associated with conventional saliva collection, shipment, and laboratory testing. The system combines a disposable interdental saliva-sampling sensor with a reusable handheld electrochemical reader. During a brief oral-care interaction, the sensor collects saliva and generates an electrochemical response associated with the target biomarker. The reader processes the signal and is intended to transmit results to a future digital platform for longitudinal trend analysis. SalivaSens is designed for rapid spot measurements rather than continuous intraoral wear. The first target biomarker is cortisol, which has potential applications in stress research, recovery monitoring, women’s health, consumer-response research, and broader wellness studies. The platform is being designed with a multi-channel architecture that could support additional biomarkers, such as alpha-amylase and selected inflammatory, metabolic, hormonal, or oral-health markers, subject to analytical feasibility and validation. VitalSens has completed initial prototype validation of two functional components: a saliva cortisol sensing front end and a handheld electrochemical reader. Initial work has demonstrated the feasibility of the underlying sensing approach, and the supporting research includes peer-reviewed publications. The relevant intellectual property originated at Tufts University; any licensing and commercialization arrangements would be structured subject to the applicable Tufts University rights. The next development stage is to optimize analytical sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, sensor manufacturing, and integration between the disposable sensor and reader. We also plan to compare measurements with an established reference assay, evaluate usability in the intended oral-care workflow, and conduct prospective repeated-measures feasibility and user-validation studies. Formal clinical claims have not yet been established. VitalSens is seeking partners for sponsored research, co-development, product integration, pilot studies, user and usability validation, and prospective clinical research. We are particularly interested in collaboration with organizations in oral care, consumer health, women’s health, stress and recovery monitoring, sports performance, and connected-health technologies. A staged feasibility project could begin with cortisol measurement and subsequently evaluate additional biomarkers and application-specific use cases.

About VitalSens

SalivaSens is a medical technology company specializing in the development of non-invasive, saliva-based diagnostic solutions. Their platform utilizes sensor technology to transform daily activities into actionable health insights. Key products include a smart pacifier designed for pediatric screening to detect signs of inflammation and early sepsis in infants, and smart dental floss configured to monitor salivary cortisol levels for tracking maternal and mental wellness. These innovations aim to replace traditional, invasive testing methods with real-time, user-friendly alternatives.

The company focuses on advancing both personal and clinical diagnostics by providing rapid and painless health data. By integrating diagnostic capabilities into routine items, SalivaSens addresses the need for continuous, accessible health monitoring outside of clinical settings. Based in Medford, Massachusetts, the firm is dedicated to improving patient outcomes through its proprietary technology platform, which offers scalable applications for various physiological and wellness-related screening needs.
