Introducing 2Roses, an advanced robotic system featuring two arms for automated plant tissue sampling in greenhouses. Integrating a Global Sensing and Navigation module, it uses deep learning for precise sampling, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in controlled environments.

Overview

The 2Roses system is a cutting-edge robotic solution designed to automate the sampling of plant tissues, specifically leaves, in greenhouse environments. This system leverages the controlled conditions of greenhouses to enable precise and efficient sampling, which is more challenging in open farmland. By integrating advanced sensing and navigation technologies, the 2Roses system aims to streamline the process of plant tissue sampling, improving both accuracy and efficiency.

Technical specifications

The 2Roses system comprises two robotic arms: a selecting-and-holding arm and a cutting arm, both coordinated through a Global Sensing and Navigation (GSN) module. The GSN module utilizes multiple cameras to capture comprehensive environmental data, feeding it into a YOLO deep learning model for environmental and plant recognition. The Robotic Arm Positioning and Control (RAP) module uses this information for precise positioning. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology facilitates accurate arm navigation and positioning by calculating distances through pulse signal timing. The system is designed to perform automated sampling with minimal human intervention, enhancing productivity in greenhouse settings.

Technology readiness level

Currently, the 2Roses system is at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating experimental proof of concept. The first stage involves training recognition models using maize and potato plants, while subsequent stages focus on optimizing arm positioning and integrating the system for comprehensive greenhouse sampling. The project is planned to progress through various stages over a 24-month period, aiming for fully functional deployment in diverse greenhouse environments.
