Developed a scalable process to produce cellulose nanofibril microcapsules for encapsulating lipophilic compounds with controlled release. Biodegradable microcapsules can be tailored for multiple applications, with demonstrated controlled release of model compounds and stability across temperature, humidity, and pH. The approach uses membrane emulsification to form micrometer-scale cellulose microspheres while avoiding hazardous chemicals through modified cellulose starting materials.

Overview

A scalable process has been developed for producing cellulose nanofibril microcapsules. The microcapsules are designed to encapsulate lipophilic compounds and enable controlled release at room temperature, using cellulose as a natural, renewable biopolymer. The process is intended to support economies of scale and improve cost effectiveness for industrial use. Biodegradability across different environments is a key sustainability feature.

Technical specifications

The process uses membrane emulsification to produce cellulose microspheres with customizable dimensions at the micrometer scale. Encapsulation has demonstrated effective controlled release of model compounds such as Nile Red. The microcapsules are designed to maintain stability and controlled release under varying conditions, including temperature, humidity, and pH. The formulation approach avoids hazardous chemicals by using modified cellulose starting materials.

Technology readiness level

The encapsulation process is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, with successful proof-of-concept results. Plans are underway to construct a pilot plant to further refine and test the process, including biodegradability of the microspheres in water, marine, and soil environments, and encapsulation of specific compounds.

About Naturbeads

Naturbeads is a sustainable materials startup that specializes in producing biodegradable cellulose-based microspheres to replace harmful microplastics. The company utilizes a patented, continuous, and closed-loop manufacturing process that transforms cellulose—derived from natural sources like trees—into perfectly spherical, uniform particles. By using a unique green-solvent system and membrane emulsification, Naturbeads can precisely control particle characteristics such as size, porosity, and surface texture without altering the chemical structure of the cellulose. This innovative technology allows for the creation of high-performance beads that maintain the functionality and cost-effectiveness of traditional plastic particles while ensuring full biodegradability.

The company's solutions serve a diverse range of industries, including cosmetics, life sciences, paints, coatings, and various industrial applications where microplastics are traditionally used as sensory enhancers, thickeners, carriers, or separators. By providing a sustainable, 100% bio-based alternative, Naturbeads helps partners meet evolving environmental regulations and reduce their ecological footprint. Having transitioned from its origins at the University of Bath to scaling up industrial production, the company has successfully established its first commercial manufacturing plant in Italy to meet growing global demand for eco-friendly, circular-economy materials.
