A biodegradable delivery system using proanthocyanidins offers a sustainable way to manage cat periodontitis by leveraging antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties to target bacterial biofilms and inflammation directly.

Overview

This innovative solution utilizes a biodegradable delivery system infused with proanthocyanidins to manage periodontitis in cats. The treatment leverages the natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties of proanthocyanidins to effectively target bacterial biofilms and reduce inflammation at the site of infection. This approach provides a sustainable and gentle alternative to traditional antibiotics, which often lead to resistance and systemic side effects.

Technical specifications

The core of this technology is a mucoadhesive delivery system that ensures sustained release of proanthocyanidins directly at the affected site. Key features include:

  • Utilizes natural compounds with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties
  • Biodegradable system that minimizes environmental impact
  • Targets biofilms and reduces inflammation without affecting the natural oral microbiota
  • Designed to be tissue-friendly and non-aggressive, promoting overall oral health
Technology readiness level

This solution is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, indicating that a prototype has been developed and validated for human use. Further testing, including safety evaluations and bioavailability studies, is planned to confirm its suitability for veterinary applications, particularly for cats.

About Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is a comprehensive public institution focused on human and animal health, combining education, research, and care across an integrated campus in Kaunas. Integration with university-owned hospitals and a veterinary teaching hospital gives industry partners direct access to clinical environments and regulated studies. Co-located core laboratories, simulation and training facilities, and coordinated clinical research support streamline feasibility, recruitment, and data capture, while proximity to a regional medtech and biopharma cluster enables agile collaboration. Research is backed by competitive funding from European Commission programs (e.g., Horizon Europe), European structural funds, and the Research Council of Lithuania. A dedicated technology transfer office advances IP, licensing, and startup creation.
