Functionalised lignin, developed by the National Institute of Chemistry, serves as a sustainable and biodegradable crosslinker for biobased epoxy resins, replacing harmful bisphenol-A. With TRL 6, it offers applications in window frame manufacturing and electronics coatings.

Overview

Functionalised lignin is a cutting-edge biopolymer innovation developed to serve as a sustainable and biodegradable crosslinker in biobased epoxy resins. This solution provides an eco-friendly alternative to bisphenol-A, a harmful compound commonly used in resin production. The functionalisation technique, pioneered by the National Institute of Chemistry, enhances lignin's reactivity, unlocking its potential in a variety of industrial applications including window frame manufacturing and coating agents for electronics. This not only reduces reliance on fossil-based chemicals but also leverages lignin's naturally occurring antioxidant and UV-blocking properties.

Technical specifications

The process of lignin functionalisation is carried out under mild conditions, at temperatures below 80°C, ensuring energy efficiency and scalability. The crosslinking procedure operates effectively at low temperatures around 100°C. By selecting lignin fractions with molecular weights between 0.6-4 kDa, the properties of the crosslinker can be finely tuned to meet specific application requirements. The process is both predictable and manageable, allowing for controlled reactivity and performance. This versatile methodology is supported by advanced modelling and process simulation using Aspen+ software to optimize and upscale production.

Technology readiness level

This innovation has achieved a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6, indicating that it has been validated in relevant industrial environments. Future efforts aim to further refine and adapt the process for broader commercial applications, supported by experts in biomaterial biodegradability and process optimization.
