This research leverages the discovery of the Candida albicans protein Pra1 as a driver of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) symptoms to develop new preventative and therapeutic strategies. It aims to enhance predictive capacity and target interventions effectively.
Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) affects nearly half of the global population, significantly impacting quality of life. Our research identifies the Candida albicans protein Pra1 as a key factor in VVC symptoms. Pra1, a zinc-binding protein, prompts an inflammatory response in the human immune system, leading to the symptoms of VVC. By targeting this protein, we aim to develop predictive and preventative solutions to combat VVC, reducing reliance on traditional antifungal drugs and minimizing the risk of antimicrobial resistance.
Key features and approaches:
This research is at Technology Readiness Level 5, with established models ready for further validation. We are seeking partners for an 18-month project exploring the interaction between the antifungal clotrimazole and the Pra1 pathway, aiming to refine and validate our interventions.
The University of Exeter is a comprehensive public research university and Russell Group member with campuses in Exeter and Cornwall, combining strong research with collaborative, industry‑facing engagement. Co‑located clinical and research space with regional NHS hospital partners at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, supported by joint facilities and a shared research office, enables clinical translation and trials. The university is an active partner in Exeter Science Park, including a University Enterprise Zone, and maintains an on‑campus Innovation Centre that links faculty with startups and scaleups. A formal collaboration with the Met Office supports data‑ and model‑intensive work adjacent to the agency’s Exeter headquarters. Research is supported by national research councils and health research funders; a central business engagement and technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, consultancy, and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
