A multifunctional microneedle patch designed to enhance burn wound healing by combining collagen scaffolds with pro-angiogenic and antibacterial properties. It accelerates healing processes like vascularization and collagen deposition, while offering antimicrobial protection.

Overview

The bioinspired multifunctional microneedle patch is an innovative solution targeting the complex challenge of deep burn wound healing. It leverages a combination of collagen-based materials and advanced therapeutic agents to accelerate wound closure, re-epithelialization, vascularization, and collagen deposition. By facilitating spatiotemporal therapeutic specificity, this patch is designed to address multiple stages of the wound healing process, ultimately promoting effective skin restoration.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Microneedle tip: Composed of collagen scaffolds integrated with the pro-angiogenic molecule LXW7-DS-SILY (LDS) to promote rapid adhesion to deep tissue and encourage angiogenesis.
  • Middle layer: A collagen matrix simulating the extracellular matrix to support tissue repair and cell migration.
  • Outer layer: A flexible GelMa-based electrospun membrane infused with silver ions for long-term antimicrobial protection and enhanced oxygen exchange.
  • Functional capabilities: Photothermal and antioxidative properties help reduce inflammation and support the healing process.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, this microneedle patch has been developed and characterized in a lab setting. Future validations include in vitro and in vivo testing to assess its efficacy in promoting endothelial cell activities and controlling infection in deep burn wounds, as well as histological analyses to evaluate its impact on dermal repair and skin regeneration.
