This research focuses on developing 3D printable bioinks that accurately mimic the mechanical behavior of pelvic tissue. By characterizing the viscoelastic properties and microstructure of specific tissues, the project aims to create sophisticated models for training and potential implant usage.

Overview

This innovative research project aims to develop 3D printable bioinks capable of replicating the complex mechanical properties of pelvic tissue. By focusing on the viscoelastic properties and microstructural features of tissues surrounding the human hip joint, the project seeks to create biomaterials with targeted microfiber architecture. These can be used to produce realistic models that mimic the compliance of native human tissue, offering significant advancements in medical training and the potential for biocompatible implantable grafts.

Technical specifications
  • Characterization of soft tissue: Detailed analysis of the viscoelastic behavior and microstructural features, such as crimp angle and fiber type, of ligaments, tendons, and muscles near the hip joint using advanced mechanical testing.
  • Additive manufacturing platform: Utilizes an innovative multiscale, multimaterial process to optimize fiber deposition in 3D printed models, enhancing their mechanical fidelity.
  • Computational modeling: Development of models to mathematically represent tissue behavior under cyclic loading, aiding in the accurate reproduction of tissue responses.
  • Microscopy techniques: Employ advanced microscopy to visualize tissue microstructure, facilitating replication through additive manufacturing.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a lab environment. Future work will involve further mechanical characterization and model refinement to enhance realism and functionality for medical applications.
