This innovative multilayer film system leverages cellulose and biodegradable coatings to create compostable packaging with superior barrier properties, suitable for dry food and pharmaceuticals. It aims to replace traditional plastics while offering sustainability and performance.

Overview

The proposed solution is a cellulose-based biodegradable barrier film designed for sustainable packaging applications, particularly in dry food and pharmaceuticals. This advanced packaging material combines cellulose substrates with biodegradable coatings to provide high-performance barrier properties against oxygen and moisture while maintaining full compostability. By optimizing the chemical compatibility and adhesion between layers, this technology addresses the limitations of single-material bio-packaging, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic packaging.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Multilayer Structure: Combines cellulose substrates with coatings like pullulan and PHA for enhanced barrier properties.
  • Biodegradable and Compostable: All components are selected to ensure complete biodegradability and compostability.
  • High Barrier Performance: Achieves superior oxygen and moisture resistance suitable for food safety and pharmaceutical applications.
  • Mechanical Integrity: Ensures robust adhesion and structural integrity through optimized layer compatibility.
  • Scalable Production: Techniques such as casting, bar-coating, and spray application are used for scalable film production.

Applications:

  • Dry Food Packaging: Enhances shelf life and safety by providing effective barriers against oxygen and moisture.
