A comprehensive hydration testing protocol developed by James Madison University to evaluate hydration status and key performance indicators of student-athletes, utilizing advanced technology for data-driven coaching and athlete readiness.

Overview

James Madison University has developed a hydration testing protocol designed to assess and improve the hydration status of student-athletes. This protocol aims to enhance athlete readiness and performance by providing critical data to coaches regarding hydration levels and key performance indicators such as high-speed distance traveled, muscular strength, and force production. By integrating education for athletes and feedback for coaches, the protocol supports informed decision-making to optimize athletic performance.

Technical specifications

Key technologies employed in the protocol:

  • GPS tracking data: Used to monitor high-speed distance traveled by athletes, providing insights into their endurance and activity levels.
  • Force plate technology: Measures force production to evaluate muscular strength and readiness.
  • Velocity-based training: Assesses speed of barbell movement, offering insights into power and acceleration capabilities.
  • Hamstring strength measurement device: Specifically measures hamstring strength, a critical factor in preventing injuries.

The protocol also incorporates urine specific gravity testing to determine hydration needs before athletic events. A passing score is .0099 or below, indicating adequate hydration, while scores above .0100 suggest the need for additional hydration interventions.

Technology readiness level

This protocol is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, having been validated in relevant environments with baseline data for a large percentage of the football team. Future testing includes urine specific gravity assessments and can be scaled for new hydration product evaluations. The project seeks partnerships to enhance testing efficiency through dedicated personnel and operational support.
