Kagawea NutrientScan is a patented digital reader that enhances lateral flow tests for micronutrient detection, offering real-time video visualizations in fluorescence-like contrast. It is portable, user-friendly, and provides rapid at-home testing with clinical-level accuracy.

Overview

Kagawea NutrientScan is an innovative portable digital reader designed to enhance the accuracy of lateral flow tests (LFTs) by providing real-time visualizations of chemical reactions. Originally utilized for infectious and pregnancy diagnostics, this technology is now being adapted for micronutrient detection, offering users the ability to perform at-home testing with results that rival clinical settings. The device displays high-resolution videos in a negative format that mimics fluorescence-style contrast, thereby increasing the sensitivity and precision of the tests.

Technical specifications

Kagawea integrates a sophisticated internal camera and lighting system that captures clear images, regardless of ambient lighting conditions. The real-time processing capability of the device amplifies faint lines, facilitating precise interpretation of test results. Designed to be compact and affordable, the Kagawea is user-friendly, making it accessible for non-specialists to conduct nutrient tests at home. It is particularly effective in visualizing chemical reactions crucial for detecting subtle changes in micronutrient levels, thus providing a highly adaptable solution for mass-market diagnostics.

Technology readiness level

Kagawea NutrientScan is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, having undergone several phases of development and validation. Future plans include refining its optical and lighting systems, enhancing software for line detection, and conducting user testing to ensure ease of use. Small-scale field trials are scheduled to assess real-world performance, with a goal to finalize a validated, low-cost prototype within 12 months.

About Swansea University

Swansea University is a comprehensive public research university with dual campuses along Swansea Bay and a partnership-driven, applied research culture. Purpose-built facilities on the Bay Campus co-locate engineering research with company spaces and pilot-scale testbeds, accelerating product development and contract R&D. The Medical School works closely with NHS partners, with an adjacent hospital supporting clinical translation and real‑world evaluation. Research activity is backed by competitive national funding through UK Research and Innovation and Innovate UK, alongside NHS collaborations and Welsh Government support. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing and spinout formation, with access to on‑campus collaboration and incubation space.
