A Bacillus velezensis RC218-based bioproduct offering biological control against Fusarium virguliforme in soybean seeds with proven efficacy on wheat and tomato pathogens. Registered and commercialized in Argentina, it's ready for broader application.

Overview

The Bacillus velezensis RC218-based bioproduct is designed to combat Fusarium virguliforme, a pathogen affecting soybean seeds. Building on over 15 years of research, this solution leverages the bacterium's ability to compete for root space and nutrients, alongside its production of Ericin S, an antibiotic effective against Gram-positive bacteria. The bioproduct has already been registered and commercialized in Argentina for controlling Fusarium graminearum in wheat, demonstrating its efficacy and readiness for market expansion.

Technical specifications
  • Active agent: Bacillus velezensis RC218, known for its competitive advantage at the root level and antibiotic production.
  • Mechanisms: Includes competition for space and nutrients, production of Ericin S, and activation of induced systemic resistance (ISR) via jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways.
  • Application: Suitable for seed treatments, enhancing shelf-life due to the presence of spores, and effective as a foliar application.
  • Development: Full genome sequenced and various lipopeptides characterized for enhanced pathogen control.
Technology readiness level

This solution has reached TRL 9, with successful registration and commercialization as a biostimulant and biocontrol agent in Argentina. It has demonstrated efficacy in multiple crops and is ready for broader application, including greenhouse and field trials for Fusarium virguliforme control.

About Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto

Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto is a comprehensive public university in southern Córdoba serving roughly 20,000 students and 1,800 faculty. Industry engagement is coordinated through a dedicated technology transfer and linkage office that brokers agreements and delivers contracted services, connecting companies to labs, specialized equipment, and field testing. On campus, the Incubadora de Empresas and a University SME Center provide mentoring, IP guidance, prototyping support, and no‑cost assistance in quality, design, and digitalization with municipal and business partners. Multiple joint institutes with CONICET embed national research capacity on campus, and the university works with the city and the regional tech cluster on a planned science and technology park to deepen commercialization pathways. Research draws support from CONICET and Argentina’s national research‑promotion programs, alongside provincial initiatives and international sponsors.
