A novel solution employing proprietary cross-linking technologies to repair and strengthen keratin fibers at the molecular level. This approach enables the creation of adhesives and stabilized extruded filaments, offering potential in various applications including textiles and biomaterials.

Overview

This solution leverages proprietary cross-linking technologies to repair and enhance keratin fibers. Developed by a team with over 20 years of experience, this innovative approach addresses damage at the molecular level, stabilizing and strengthening the fibers. The technology promises significant advancements in applications such as adhesives and extruded filaments, catering to industries ranging from textiles to biomaterials.

Technical specifications
  • The process involves the extraction and modification of keratin proteins and peptides to repair keratin fibers.
  • Proprietary cross-linking methods are applied to achieve molecular and microstructural repair.
  • Key features include the ability to form water-stable sheets or blocks from modified keratin and stabilize extruded filaments using keratin cross-linkers.
  • Extensive testing includes molecular analysis (proteomics, mass spectrometry, NMR, FTIR) and physical evaluations (tensile properties, thermal analysis).
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, the technology has undergone validation in laboratory settings with plans for further optimization and testing under specific client conditions. The solution is ready for pilot trials and collaborations to advance towards commercialization.

About Scion Research

Scion was a New Zealand Crown Research Institute in Rotorua; on July 1, 2025 it became a group within the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science. Its 114‑hectare Te Papa Tipu Innovation Park campus co‑locates advanced labs with 40+ tenant organisations, enabling daily collaboration with industry and government. On‑site facilities support progression from lab to pilot and demonstration, with partnering models that connect researchers, mana whenua and regional supply chains. Research is backed by competitive national funding administered by MBIE, including the Strategic Science Investment Fund and Endeavour Fund, alongside industry contracts. Commercialisation is supported by dedicated teams that manage IP, licensing and partnerships.
