KRABS Biotechnology is a startup focused on developing new antibodies using phage display for human and animal health. The company has developed a new topical treatment for atopic dermatitis using a new antibody in a poloxamer hydrogel matrix targeting the skin enzyme kallikrein 7. The product is object of patent filing in USPTO (USA, already approved - US12590170B2), EPO (Europe - EP4151657A1) and INPI (Brazil – BR1020200096796A2), and is under safety and efficacy in vivo trial, performed in dogs with atopic dermatitis. Almost fifteen animals have been tested, and no critical side effects were reported, pointing to safe treatment. So far, treated groups showed a better evolution of symptoms compared to placebo group in study with 0.1 mg/g of anti-KLK7 antibody formulation. Next step will involve dose-response assay, in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical trials, clinical trials, and production scalability tests. Clinical trials results will be used in regulatory affairs and for product registration at the main regulatory agencies, such as FDA, EMA, ANVISA and MAPA. The product will not be only for human health but is also a potential new treatment in animal health, more specifically for dogs with atopic dermatitis.
KRABS Biotechnology is a Brazilian startup that specializes in the development of recombinant antibodies using Phage Display technology. By utilizing libraries of scFv and nanobodies, the company offers a research and development platform that eliminates the need for animal testing. This approach is designed to produce monoclonal antibodies for various applications in human and animal health, including drug development, in vitro diagnostics, and environmental monitoring, while providing a more ethical and sustainable process compared to traditional methods.
The company is recognized for developing a topical chimeric antibody therapy for atopic dermatitis, which targets the human kallikrein 7 (KLK7) enzyme. This drug, formulated as a hydrogel, has secured patent protection in the United States, with additional applications in Brazil and Europe. By addressing the limitations of existing systemic treatments, such as side effects and patient resistance, KRABS aims to provide an innovative alternative for dermatological conditions. The startup, supported by FAPESP research programs, collaborates with academic institutions to advance its pipeline and facilitate the production of its biotechnological assets.
