University

An integrated precision agriculture platform combining AI-driven scheduling algorithms with IoT sensors and drone-based remote sensing to optimize inter-seeding timing and conditions in intercropping systems, enhancing primary crop growth while successfully establishing companion crops.

Overview

This solution addresses a critical challenge in intercropping systems: determining the optimal timing and conditions for inter-seeding companion crops alongside primary crops. While intercropping offers well-documented benefits for soil health and yield diversification, farmers often struggle to identify the right moment to introduce secondary crops without compromising the primary crop's growth. This platform leverages artificial intelligence, IoT-based soil monitoring, and drone-based remote sensing to deliver data-driven recommendations that maximize yield and minimize resource waste.

The system is designed for farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and precision agriculture providers seeking to improve the efficiency and outcomes of intercropped field operations.

Technical specifications

Core capabilities:

  • AI-driven scheduling algorithms that analyze crop-specific growth rates, sunlight hours, and water availability to predict optimal inter-seeding windows
  • Custom IoT nodes for real-time monitoring of soil health, moisture content, and nutrient levels, previously developed by the research team and adapted for intercropping applications
  • Drone-based remote sensing to capture crop growth data and field-level conditions across intercropped plots
  • Holistic data integration combining historical inter-seeding success rates with real-time soil and environmental metrics for comprehensive decision support
  • Cloud-based web portal enabling scalable deployment and accessible monitoring across larger farming operations

Key benefits:

  • Precise timing recommendations for inter-seeding to maximize germination success
  • Improved growth conditions for the primary crop during intercrop establishment
  • Reduced resource waste through targeted, condition-based interventions
  • Scalable architecture suitable for deployment across diverse farming operations
Technology readiness level

The solution is at an early-to-mid stage of development. Individual components, including AI-based scheduling and IoT soil health monitoring, have been validated in separate research and field applications. The research team has previously developed custom IoT nodes for crop health monitoring, though these have not yet been applied to intercropping systems specifically. The integrated approach combining AI analytics with real-time IoT monitoring for intercropping optimization represents a novel application.

A two-year validation roadmap is planned: Year 1 focuses on deploying IoT nodes in intercropped fields, training the AI model on combined historical and real-time data, and pilot testing in controlled plots. Year 2 involves refining algorithms based on pilot results, documenting findings, and scaling the system to larger farming operations through a cloud-based web portal.
