An interactive machine learning system that identifies spray nozzle types from images with high accuracy, helping farmers and applicators select the correct nozzles to reduce spray drift and improve pesticide application efficiency and environmental safety.
This solution is an image analysis tool built on artificial intelligence and machine learning that recognizes different spray nozzle types used in pesticide applications. By identifying nozzles through a simple photo capture, the tool helps farmers and applicators select the correct nozzle for their intended application, reducing common mistakes that contribute to spray drift. Spray drift remains a significant challenge in agriculture despite ongoing education efforts, and this tool offers a practical, technology-driven approach to bridge the gap between science-based nozzle selection and everyday field decisions.
The system is being developed as an interactive tool that can also support assessments of spray drift potential, making it valuable not only for individual applicators but also for extension programs, agronomy services, and environmental stewardship initiatives. Its primary value lies in translating nozzle identification knowledge into immediate, actionable guidance at the point of decision-making.
The tool is at an early-to-mid stage of development. A substantial image database and a functional machine learning model have been established, and preliminary validation has demonstrated high recognition accuracy for a subset of nozzle types. Future work focuses on optimizing computational strategies for mobile application development, expanding and integrating the nozzle image database with server and operational systems, and conducting field validation with farmers, applicators, and industry personnel across a wider range of nozzle types and image conditions. The project is actively seeking partnership funding to support key personnel through these next development and validation phases.
