Alginate-based encapsulation for targeted probiotic delivery

Technology
In development
Company

This innovative solution utilizes alginate beads to encapsulate probiotics, ensuring their protection and targeted deployment to the intestines and colon. The technology supports room temperature storage and stability in low pH beverages until reaching the gut.

Overview

The alginate-based encapsulation technology developed by Vitabolus, Inc, provides a novel solution for delivering probiotics directly to the intestines and colon. Encapsulating probiotic strains within alginate beads protects them from harsh gastric conditions and ensures their viability upon deployment in the gut. This solution facilitates room temperature storage and stability in low pH beverages, enhancing the practicality and efficacy of probiotic consumption.

Technical specifications

The core of this technology lies in its use of alginate, a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) material, known for its unique encapsulation properties. The encapsulated probiotic product, referred to as "VB88," will undergo rigorous testing to ensure:

  • Stability and viability in low pH beverages
  • Room temperature storage capability
  • Effective deployment and release at neutral intestinal pH, validated through USP simulated gastric and intestinal fluids
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, this solution has been validated at the laboratory level. Future steps include in vitro and in vivo testing to assess safety and efficacy, and regulatory consultations to prepare for commercial readiness.
