Innovative biodegradable microencapsulation technology using PEO-PCLA amphiphilic copolymers to form microparticles under 10 micrometers. These particles encapsulate hydrophobic ingredients and allow adjustable biodegradability in soil, offering potential in agriculture and material science.
Amphiphilic PEO-b-PCLA microparticles represent a novel biodegradable microencapsulation technology. These microparticles, synthesized from a PEO-PCLA amphiphilic copolymer with a Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) around 1, are designed to encapsulate hydrophobic active ingredients effectively. By adjusting the ratio of ε-caprolactone (CL) and lactic acid (LA), the biodegradability of these particles can be controlled, making them highly versatile for applications in agriculture and beyond.
Key features:
This technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated in laboratory settings. Future validation will focus on optimizing the loading efficiency of hydrophobic ingredients and assessing biodegradability under varied conditions. The project aims to reach higher TRLs through further development and testing.
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) is a public applied-research university in Taipei with roughly 10,000 students and a strongly practice-oriented character. Its Office of Research and Development connects faculty, government, and enterprises, while dedicated industry–university cooperation and technology-transfer functions support sponsored research, IP management, licensing, and commercialization. An Industry-Academia Innovation College and business incubation function give companies structured routes to engage with applied research, talent development, and entrepreneurship. Research is supported by Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and other public agencies, alongside industry collaboration.
