A cutting-edge solution leveraging Faster R-CNN and UAV technology to automate the creation of geospatially accurate plot grids, enhancing precision and efficiency in agricultural research.

Overview

This innovative solution combines Faster R-CNN technology with UAV-detected field posts to create geospatially accurate open-field plot grids. By utilizing drones equipped with real-time kinematic (RTK) technology, this system automates the creation of plot grids while adhering to user-defined patterns, significantly improving the assignment of crop traits to individual plots. The integration of high-resolution UAV imagery and structured metadata from pre-planting phases enhances precision and streamlines the UAV image processing workflow.

Technical specifications
  • Faster R-CNN Integration: Employs a region proposal network to detect field posts and create plot grids based on UAV images.
  • UAV Technology: Utilizes drones with RTK technology for precise geolocation and capturing high-resolution images.
  • Software Tools: Integrates with Agisoft Metashape or Pix4D for 3D analysis and high-throughput structured metadata for plot creation.
  • Data Utilization: Builds on 120Tb of UAV maize data collected since 2016, improving existing tools with enhanced object detection and geolocation capabilities.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 2, this solution is in the early stages of development, with future validation plans involving field stake arrangements and UAV flights to optimize the detection and proposal algorithms. The project will focus on refining these algorithms to ensure high accuracy in geospatial plot grid creation.
