Fraunhofer IMM introduces a fully automated qPCR platform for detecting Salmonella in chocolate within hours. The system features homogenization, DNA purification, and multiplex qPCR, achieving a detection limit of 1 CFU/375g. Ideal for food safety applications.

Overview

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM presents an innovative automated platform designed for the rapid detection of Salmonella in chocolate products. This cutting-edge technology leverages quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) to provide results within a few hours, significantly enhancing food safety protocols. The platform is capable of processing 375g of chocolate, ensuring comprehensive testing with a detection limit as low as 1 colony-forming unit (CFU) per 375g. This makes it an invaluable tool for chocolate manufacturers seeking to ensure product safety and compliance with stringent health regulations.

Technical specifications
  • Homogenization and Sample Preparation: The system efficiently homogenizes up to 375g of chocolate, preparing it for further analysis.
  • Bacteria Concentration: It concentrates Salmonella from large volumes to microliter scale for precise detection.
  • DNA Purification and Multiplex qPCR: The platform employs advanced lysis and DNA purification techniques followed by multiplex qPCR, allowing for the detection of multiple Salmonella subspecies.
  • Live/Dead Discrimination: An optional module for distinguishing between live and dead cells enhances the platform's utility.
  • Automation: The platform can be semi or fully automated, integrating various processes for streamlined operation.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in laboratory settings with various sample matrices, including minced meat. Future validation efforts will focus on optimizing chocolate sample preparation and multiplex qPCR integration, paving the way for commercial deployment.
