An innovative automated solution using UAVs, GIS, and machine learning to create accurate open-field plot grids for agricultural trials, reducing manual labor and enhancing data integration.

Overview

The proposed solution revolutionizes the creation of open-field plot grids in large-scale agricultural breeding trials by utilizing an automated system that combines UAV imaging, GIS technology, and machine learning. This approach eliminates the need for manual GPS measurements, significantly reducing labor and enhancing precision. By employing this technology, researchers can efficiently generate geospatially accurate grids that facilitate better data management and experimental structuring.

Technical specifications

The system leverages ground control points (GCPs) and UAVs equipped with Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) technology to capture high-resolution images. These images provide crucial geospatial data, which is integrated with Geospatial Information System (GIS) technology to manage, analyze, and visualize data effectively. Machine learning algorithms further enhance the process by automatically recognizing and delineating individual plots from UAV images, ensuring precise plot boundary identification.

Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, this solution is in the early stages of validation. It involves a combination of established and novel methodologies, with further development and testing planned to advance its readiness for broader applications in agricultural research.

About Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University is a large, comprehensive public research university in Lubbock and an anchor of the Texas Tech University System, coupling academic breadth with applied, collaborative research. Industry partners engage through a research park and incubator, co-located labs, shared core facilities, and West Texas field sites for pilot-scale and real-world testing. Proximity to the Permian Basin and regional manufacturing, plus collaboration with the system’s health sciences center, creates clear pathways for product development, clinical translation, and talent pipelines. Research is supported by competitive federal funding from agencies such as NSF, DOE, USDA, NIH, DoD, and NASA, and a dedicated technology transfer office streamlines IP, licensing, startup formation, and corporate contracting.
