Sustainable bio-based rigid plastic packaging materials developed from lignin and furfuryl alcohol derived from plant biomass. This technology offers an environmentally friendly, biodegradable alternative to petroleum-derived resins for packaging applications, reinforced with bio-based fillers for enhanced performance.

Overview

This research focuses on developing bio-based resins and molding technologies for rigid packaging applications as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived plastics. The technology addresses growing global demand for environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and recyclable packaging materials driven by tightening environmental regulations and consumer preference for green products.

The solution centers on producing rigid plastic packaging materials from lignin and furfuryl alcohol, both derived from plant biomass. These bio-based materials are reinforced with fillers such as bentonite, cellulose, kaolin, activated carbon, and other bio-based additives to achieve performance characteristics suitable for diverse packaging applications.

Technical specifications

The production process involves several key stages:

  • Lignin isolation: Plant biomass is subjected to a soda pulping process to extract lignin, which is then purified and liquefied in ethylene glycol
  • Furfural production: A modified approach is used to produce furfural and subsequently furfuryl alcohol from plant-derived sources
  • Resin formulation: Lignin-based polyol is combined with furfuryl alcohol, glyoxal, distilled water, and diethyl ether to create the bio-based resin system
  • Reinforcement: The resulting materials are reinforced with bio-based fillers including bentonite, cellulose, kaolin, and activated carbon to enhance mechanical and physical properties

The research builds on prior doctoral work demonstrating successful isolation and enhancement of intermediate chemicals from plant biomass for bio-based adhesives and rigid foams. Lignin-based formaldehyde resins, including lignin-phenol-formaldehyde and formaldehyde-free lignin-furfural adhesives, have informed this approach.

Technology readiness level

This research is at an early-to-mid stage development. The lignin isolation, purification, and liquefaction processes have been validated through prior doctoral research. Current work focuses on optimization and characterization of each component (lignin, furfural, furfuryl alcohol, and the final rigid packaging materials). Future validation will include production, optimization, and characterization of the final packaging materials along with packaging application testing. The technology is positioned for further development toward commercial packaging applications.
