Bioastra offers 100% biobased, recyclable, and plastic-free barrier coatings and films. These innovative biopolymers are designed for cold and hot beverage containers, providing grease resistance while being recyclable in standard facilities. Ideal for sustainable packaging.

Overview

Bioastra presents a pioneering solution in sustainable packaging with our bio-based, recyclable, and plastic-free barrier coatings and films. These biopolymer solutions, BioelastX A and B, are designed for use in beverage containers, offering both hot and cold holding capabilities with excellent grease resistance. The materials are fully recyclable via standard curbside facilities, aligning with plastic-free definitions and contributing to sustainable packaging solutions.

Technical specifications

BioelastX A: A 100% biobased non-aliphatic polymer, adheres to paper surfaces through heat sealing, and undergoes hydrolysis during the caustic wash step, ensuring recyclability.

BioelastX B: A smart biopolymer featuring high-pH moieties for easy separation and recovery during repulping, facilitating simultaneous recovery of both paper and polymer. These formulations have been successfully applied in high-end applications like biofoam packaging and seam biotapes, ensuring their robust performance in wash-fastness and oil resistance. The materials are designed as drop-in solutions compatible with standard coating and lamination processes, achieving cost parity with traditional polymers.

Technology readiness level

These biopolymers are at Technology Readiness Level 6, having been scaled and commercialized in adjacent applications. Future plans include a six-week validation process involving sample creation and pilot trials to demonstrate heat sealing and recycling compatibility.

About Bioastra

BioAstra Technologies Inc. is a sustainable biomaterials company that develops smart polymer alternatives to traditional polyurethane plastics. Their technology platform, centered on patented bio-based BioElastomers, includes products like BioFoam, BioStretch, and BioAdhesive. These materials are engineered to mimic the elasticity, durability, and performance of conventional plastics while being bio-sourced, biocompatible, and produced through water-free processes. The company utilizes a phase-switching mechanism that allows their materials to be easily recycled or composted at the end of their lifecycle, effectively separating from fabrics or solid structures to facilitate circularity in manufacturing.

These materials are designed to address the environmental impact of pervasive plastic pollution across various industries, including fashion, home textiles, automotive applications, and packaging. By providing scalable, biobased alternatives that function on existing machinery, BioAstra enables brands and manufacturers to reduce their reliance on petrochemical-based plastics without compromising product performance. The company actively collaborates with industry partners to integrate these smart materials into commercial products, aiming to drive a paradigm shift toward simpler, more sustainable, and cost-effective end-of-life recycling solutions.
