Biocontrol product concept using the Fusarium-specific mycoparasite Sphaerodes mycoparasitica to suppress Fusarium wilt (TR4) in banana. The biotrophic mycoparasite enables a targeted, protocooperative strategy when paired with complementary plant genotypes. The platform has progressed from laboratory discovery to commercial-level inoculant production, formulation, and field application in cereal systems against Fusarium Head Blight, with adaptation pathways for banana and potential mycotoxin reduction.

Overview

Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4), is one of the most destructive diseases affecting global banana production. This solution introduces an innovative biocontrol agent (BCA) based on Sphaerodes mycoparasitica, a specialized biotrophic mycoparasite that specifically targets Fusarium pathogens. Unlike generalist biocontrol fungi such as Trichoderma, which act through necrotrophic mechanisms, S. mycoparasitica establishes a living relationship with its host fungus, enabling more precise and sustained suppression of disease-causing strains. The technology has already progressed from laboratory discovery through to large-scale commercial-level production of inoculants, formulation, and field application in cereal crops against Fusarium Head Blight (FHB). A protocooperative strategy that pairs the BCA with specific plant genotypes is expected to enhance efficacy against TR4 in banana.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Biotrophic mycoparasite: Sphaerodes mycoparasitica specifically parasitizes Fusarium oxysporum formae speciales and F. graminearum chemotypes, offering targeted pathogen suppression
  • Protocooperative BCA-plant genotype approach: Combines the biocontrol agent with complementary crop genotypes to maximize disease resistance and yield protection
  • Scalable production: Technology has advanced from initial discovery to commercial-level inoculant manufacturing, formulation, and field application protocols
  • Cross-crop adaptability: Validated in cereal production ecosystems against FHB across multiple host genotypes and resistance levels, with adaptation pathways for banana
  • Mycotoxin reduction potential: Addresses both TR4 disease pressure and associated mycotoxin contamination concerns in banana
  • Molecular characterization: Specific molecular signatures between the mycoparasite and F. graminearum have been identified, supporting targeted deployment
Technology readiness level

The Sphaerodes mycoparasitica biocontrol technology has progressed through discovery, laboratory validation, and large-scale commercial-level production of inoculants and formulations. Field validation has been completed in cereal crop systems against Fusarium Head Blight across diverse genotypes and production environments. The next stage involves preparing a comprehensive summary report to support discussions on adapting this biocontrol platform specifically for TR4 management in banana. This represents an advanced readiness level for cereal applications, with active development underway for banana crop deployment and mycotoxin mitigation.
