A biodegradable hydrogel composite designed for sustained nutrient release from fertilizers, using ionic crosslinking and biochar to improve nutrient-use efficiency and minimize environmental impacts. The technology is scalable and compatible with various nutrient sources.

Overview

The biodegradable alginate–biochar hydrogel is an innovative solution for sustained nutrient release in agricultural applications. This technology utilizes a composite matrix of alginate and biochar, designed to encapsulate nitrogen and micronutrient sources. The hydrogel component regulates water diffusion and nutrient release kinetics, while biochar acts as a nutrient carrier, reducing leaching and improving nutrient-use efficiency. This approach addresses the need for sustainable, low-energy alternatives to conventional coated fertilizers, minimizing environmental impact.

Technical specifications

The hydrogel composite is synthesized through an ionic crosslinking process involving sodium alginate and calcium ions, creating a porous structure that encapsulates nutrients. Key features include:

  • Scalable, bench-scale synthesis under ambient, water-based conditions
  • No hazardous solvents required
  • Compatible with urea, micronutrients, and organic nutrient sources
  • Potential for reduced nutrient leaching and enhanced efficiency compared to synthetic polymer coatings
  • Characterization through nutrient release profiling, swelling analysis, and structural evaluation using SEM
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated at the bench scale with ongoing efforts to optimize formulations and assess scalability. Future validation aims to enhance formulation reproducibility and compatibility with diverse fertilizer inputs, supporting scale-up and field trials.
