A novel, biodegradable nanocomposite film for food packaging that combines sodium alginate with lignin nanoparticles and tannic acid, enhancing mechanical strength, barrier properties, and antimicrobial activity.
The proposed biodegradable alginate-tannic acid-lignin nanocomposite film aims to revolutionize food packaging by combining the natural biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) with lignin nanoparticles (LNP) and tannic acid (TA). This innovative solution enhances the mechanical strength, barrier properties against gases and water vapor, and introduces antimicrobial activity, UV-blocking capability, and thermal stability. This makes it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional non-biodegradable packaging options, potentially extending the shelf life of food products.
Currently, the technology is at TRL 2, with foundational research and early-stage formulation testing underway. Future steps involve the preparation of the nanocomposite film, followed by comprehensive testing in real-world packaging applications to validate its performance.
