Innovative biodegradable block copolymer micelles for encapsulating and releasing active ingredients, featuring tunable biodegradability and enhanced environmental impact.

Overview

Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed biodegradable block copolymer micelles designed for the encapsulation and controlled release of active ingredients. These micelles are synthesized using radical polymerization, incorporating biodegradable comonomers to enable environmental degradation. The technology offers a versatile solution for encapsulating both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances, providing a controlled release mechanism while minimizing environmental impact.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes controlled radical polymerization to create block copolymers.
  • Incorporates thionolactones to introduce hydrolyzable thioesters for biodegradability.
  • Capable of encapsulating a wide range of active ingredients.
  • Characterized by dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy.
  • Release kinetics measured using UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Applications:

  • Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical delivery systems.
  • Agrochemical formulations.
  • Personal care and cosmetic products.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 3, having been experimentally demonstrated to a certain extent in a laboratory setting. The next steps involve further synthesis and characterization of the biodegradable polymers and micelles, followed by validation of biodegradability according to ISO protocol 17556:2012.
