Biodegradable fertilizer coating for enhanced nitrogen efficiency

Technology
In development
Company

Olipha offers a proprietary biodegradable fertilizer coating using ultra-low viscosity PHAs, enhancing nitrogen use efficiency by reducing leaching up to 60%. Suitable for sustainable agriculture, this innovation aligns nutrient release with plant needs.

Overview

Olipha introduces a biodegradable fertilizer coating technology utilizing ultra-low viscosity polyhydroxyalkanoates (ulvPHA) to significantly enhance nitrogen use efficiency in agricultural applications. Unlike conventional polymer-coated fertilizers (PCFs), this solution reduces nitrogen leaching by up to 60% and aligns nutrient release with plant uptake needs, thus optimizing fertilizer efficiency. The technology leverages microbial breakdown for controlled release, promoting soil health and sustainability.

Technical specifications
  • Ultra-low viscosity PHAs: These PHAs can be melt processed with urea at temperatures below its decomposition point (150-155°C), avoiding the degradation issues seen with standard PHAs.
  • Biodegradable and eco-friendly: The coating decomposes naturally, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
  • Proprietary release mechanism: Utilizes microbial activity to control nutrient release, preventing burst releases and enhancing soil carbon.
  • Production: Currently scaled in 20-liter bioreactors, producing a few pounds per week, with the potential for scale-up through strategic partnerships.
Technology readiness level

The technology is at TRL 4, having proven its concept in laboratory settings. Further scaling and field testing are planned, contingent on collaboration with industry partners.
