Novel biodegradable solid foam hybrid built on a hexagonal PVA scaffold stabilised by vermiculite clay and activated carbon microparticles. Offers antiseptic action, dirt removal, and absorption of contaminants from water and fuels for cleaning and environmental applications.

Overview

This innovation is a biodegradable, highly porous solid foam hybrid built on a hexagonal scaffolding of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) wet foam, stabilised by microparticles of vermiculite clay and activated carbon (AC) derived from agricultural waste. The resulting material combines a honeycomb-like interconnected structure with antiseptic properties, delivering a dual-purpose cleaning and absorbing medium.

The hybrid is flexible enough to be squeezed and rigid enough to remove dirt from surfaces, while the absorbent PVA matrix captures multiple contaminants from used water or fuels. Because the precursor is a liquid foam that gels into a solid, the final product can be shaped by the mould or container used during preparation, enabling tailored cell size, wall thickness, and overall geometry.

Technical specifications

Material composition:

  • PVA acts as the structural polymer and surface-active stabiliser of the wet foam
  • Vermiculite clay provides natural mineral reinforcement
  • Activated carbon of agricultural origin delivers antiseptic action and contaminant absorption

Structural features:

  • Hexagonal, double-faced hierarchical porous architecture inherited from the liquid foam precursor
  • Cell size, orientation, and wall thickness tuned by the contact angle between particles and the bubble or drop interface
  • Particles adsorb on foam cell walls regardless of size, shape, hydrophobicity, or surface charge, securing mono-dispersity within the matrix
  • Gelling transition from liquid-like to solid-like behaviour allows the product to adopt the shape of its container

Functional capabilities:

  • Antiseptic action from the activated carbon component
  • Mechanical flexibility for squeezing combined with rigidity for surface cleaning
  • Absorption of multi-element contaminants from water and fuels
  • Demonstrated adaptability with various carbon and ceramic particles for heat transfer, water purification, and gas absorption or separation
Technology readiness level

The approach has been validated through interfacial studies of single air-liquid interfaces using drop and bubble shape analysis and surface tension measurements, with experiments on multiple carbon and ceramic particle types confirming the sustainability of the method and the adaptability of the freestanding porous materials.

Future validation requires interfacial studies of the particles of interest in PVA solution to schedule the adsorption mechanism onto foam cells, define the optimum formulation ratio, and carry out solidification, drying, and morphological characterisation with potential for scale-up. This work is estimated to take one year with funding for key personnel. The team is seeking a partner institution equipped for behavioural testing of the non-toxic, biodegradable hybrid, with the vision and resources to support commercialisation or scaled-up production.
