A UV/electron-beam curable coating technology that embeds GRAS components in an energy-curable resin to deliver moisture control and biodegradability on food contact packaging. Designed for standard coating equipment at commercial line speeds, targeting Pepsi's moisture and biodegradation performance goals.
This solution is a biodegradable, low-VOC coating designed to remediate moisture in food contact packaging. It is built on a proven energy-curable resin platform in which GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) functional components are embedded directly into the coating matrix. The approach combines tortuosity, humectants, and water activity poising agents to control moisture migration, while biodegradable additives such as PLA scrap, amylose, and cellulose enable the cured film to break down into a fine powder at end of life. The coating is formulated for use on PLA and other packaging substrates selected by the customer and is compatible with FDA food-contact approved resins.
The underlying energy-curable coating platform has been validated at benchtop and commercial scale, with printed and e-beam cured coatings already produced and tested for a range of food packaging functions. The current program extends this platform by incorporating moisture-remediating functionalities into an FDA food-contact approved resin and proof-coating it onto PLA or customer-selected substrates. Planned validation includes moisture permeability testing per ASTM E96 (or customer-preferred methods) and biodegradation testing per ASTM D6400, ASTM D5988-03, or ISO 17556:2019 (or customer-preferred methods), followed by printing trials and performance evaluation.
