Explore a biodegradable PEF-nanocellulose composite coating offering excellent barrier properties against CO2 and O2, with potential applications in sustainable packaging. The technology aims to combine mechanical strength with reduced material thickness.

Overview

The biodegradable PEF-nanocellulose coating is engineered to provide exceptional barrier properties against gases like CO2 and O2, making it an ideal solution for sustainable packaging applications. This innovative composite utilizes poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF), a bio-based polyester known for its extraordinary barrier performance, in combination with nanocellulose to enhance mechanical strength even at reduced film thicknesses.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Bio-based PEF offers significantly lower permeability to CO2 and O2 compared to traditional PET, enhancing product shelf-life.
  • The integration of nanocellulose compensates for reduced mechanical properties when reducing film thickness, maintaining structural integrity.
  • The technology involves creating a homogeneous PEF-nanocellulose-solvent mixture using mild organic solvents compatible with both components.
  • Potential for extension into fiber production via gel-spinning for broader application.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 2, indicating it is in the early stages of development. The focus is on preparing the composite via solution mixing and casting, with ongoing tests to validate mechanical performance, adhesiveness, and barrier properties.
