Innovative biodegradable PHA-based spray coating enhances molded fiber packaging with a double-layer structure, utilizing microfibrillated cellulose for improved barrier performance and recyclability. Ready for industrial use with precise application technology.
The biodegradable PHA spray coating solution revolutionizes molded fiber food packaging by integrating a high-performance, sustainable coating technology. Developed through collaboration with Kemira and Danimer Scientific, this solution employs a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer, which is fully biodegradable and food-contact compliant. The application features a novel double-layer system with an inner microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) layer that reduces porosity and absorbency, enhancing the coating's effectiveness and supporting fiber recyclability. The AutoJet® 1550+ spray system is used for precise and efficient coating application, making the technology scalable and industrially viable.
This technology is at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9, indicating that it is fully developed and ready for commercial deployment. The formulation is finalized, with ongoing efforts to optimize tooling and application processes for specific product geometries, such as 300 mL molded pulp paper bottles, ensuring functional and production efficiency.
