Company

Innovative biodegradable micro-capsules using PHB for controlled nutrient release in water-based systems. Tailorable core-shell design ensures high encapsulation efficiency and precise release kinetics while biodegrading without toxic residues.

Overview

Ex Seed presents an innovative solution leveraging biodegradable PHB-based micro-capsules for controlled nutrient release. This technology utilizes Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) combined with bio-based nanomaterials, providing a tuneable release profile. The micro-capsules are designed to degrade in the environment without leaving any toxic residues, making them ideal for applications in agriculture and environmental management.

Technical specifications

The micro-capsules are crafted from PHAs such as Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and Polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV), known for their biodegradability and efficacy as controlled release matrices. Key features include:

  • Use of non-toxic solvents like acetic acid and acetone for tailorable core-shell morphology
  • High encapsulation efficiency through solvent evaporation and high shear homogenization methods
  • Adjustable release kinetics achieved through manipulation of solvent parameters and incorporation of nano-materials
  • Mathematical modeling to optimize formulation parameters and predict release behavior
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 3, this technology has been validated at lab-scale, with ongoing development to refine the encapsulation process and release behavior. Ex Seed seeks partnerships to scale production and test nutrient release on an industrial level.

About Ex Seed

Founded in 2023, Ex Seed is a deep-tech food startup from Bulgaria focusing on plant protein innovation. The founders combined chemical engineering expertise with a sustainability ethos to tackle waste from sunflower oil production – a significant industry in Eastern Europe. Ex Seed is part of an incubator program and is gaining attention for promoting sunflower protein as the next big plant protein.
