Biodegradable polymer microencapsulation for herbicide UV protection

Technology

Company

Ultinat, Inc. offers a proprietary microencapsulation technology that protects oil-based herbicides from UV degradation by forming microsized particles with biodegradable polymers. This innovation enhances herbicide stability and efficacy under UV exposure.

Overview

Microencapsulation technology uses biodegradable polymers to enhance the stability and efficacy of oil-based herbicides. The method forms microsized particles that protect active ingredients from UV degradation, a common cause of reduced herbicide effectiveness. Initial tests indicate the capability to protect acetochlor, a widely used herbicide, from UV exposure without significant degradation.

Technical specifications
  • Microencapsulation Process: Utilizes biodegradable polymers to encase the herbicide, forming protective microsized particles.
  • Core Composition: The encapsulation includes a mixture of acetochlor and an inactive ingredient at a 1:2 ratio.
  • UV Protection: Demonstrated to significantly reduce degradation of acetochlor under UV exposure compared to the unprotected formulation.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated in laboratory settings. Plans are in place for further pilot testing and field trials, along with scaling up for manufacturing and potential licensing opportunities.
