Technology
In development
Company

Innovative biodegradable sprayable coatings using PHA and PBAT/PBS blends offer acid resistance and strong fiber adhesion, suitable for food-contact applications. These coatings feature low water vapor transmission and enhanced barrier properties using biodegradable nanoparticles.

Overview

An approach to biodegradable sprayable coatings using PHA-based materials and PBAT/PBS blends is designed to support food-contact safety requirements while delivering performance characteristics such as acid resistance and strong adhesion to fiber. The formulation targets low water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) and oxygen transmission rates (OTR), aiming to improve durability and environmental sustainability for packaging applications.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • PHA-based coatings: Offer biodegradable and acid-resistant properties for industrial use
  • PBAT/PBS blends: Provide low WVTR and OTR while supporting strong adhesion to fiber surfaces
  • Biopolymer networks: Crosslinked materials for high strength and durability
  • Nanocomposite bio-coats: Enhanced with biodegradable nanoparticles to improve barrier properties
  • Sprayable through standard nozzles, validated for lab-scale operations
  • Food-grade compliant materials to support food-contact applications

Performance indicators:

  • WVTR ≤ 0.31 g/m²/day
  • OTR ≤ 2.0 cc/m²/day
  • 85% fiber recovery through alkali-soluble systems

Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 5, with initial validations completed in laboratory settings. Future development includes co-development and sponsored research to advance formulation, barrier, and recyclability testing, with integration into pilot production facilities planned. Funding of $100,000 is sought for further development phases, including pilot production support.
