Utilizing femtosecond laser micro-texturing, this innovation creates bioinspired micro-patterns on denture bases for enhanced adhesion and sealing. The technology ensures strong hold, superior seal against food ingress, and easy removal, making it ideal for daily use.

Overview

The proposed solution leverages precision femtosecond (fs) laser micro-texturing to enhance denture hold and seal through bioinspired micro-patterns, such as octopus-sucker-like suction cups, on PMMA denture bases and novel fixative films and pads. This innovative approach ensures a strong and reliable all-day mechanical hold, superior sealing against food ingress, and easy removal with minimal residue, making it suitable for daily use in oral environments. The technology supports new denture fixation formats and multi-component systems that separate hold, seal, and removability functions.

Technical specifications
  • Bioinspired micro-patterns: Octopus-sucker-like suction cups created using femtosecond laser technology.
  • Material compatibility: Safe for daily use, avoiding harmful materials like PVM/MA and zinc.
  • Enhanced adhesion and sealing: Provides strong hold and superior seal against food ingress.
  • Reduced microbial colonization: The textured surfaces help minimize microbial adhesion.
  • Easy removal: Designed for clean removal with minimal ooze or residue.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, this technology is in the proof-of-concept stage. A structured 6-month research plan is in place to validate its effectiveness through various in-vitro tests and characterizations. The research includes optimizing micro-patterns and evaluating adhesion and seal performance, leading to a comprehensive technical report and a Phase-2 commercialization roadmap.
