Innovative use of microfibrillated cellulose and biobased wax dispersion to enhance barrier properties in fiber-based packaging, offering improved grease, gas, water, and moisture resistance. Ideal for sustainable, large-scale production without plastics.

Overview

KCL presents an innovative approach to enhancing the barrier properties of fiber-based packaging through the use of microfibrillated cellulose derived from sugarbeet pulp and biobased aqueous wax dispersion made from hydrogenated vegetable oil. This solution not only improves film formation, grease, and gas barriers but also enhances mechanical properties, making it a robust choice for sustainable packaging solutions. The biobased wax dispersion further boosts water and moisture resistance, offering a comprehensive barrier enhancement without the use of plastics.

Technical specifications
  • Microfibrillated Cellulose: Utilized as an additive in barrier coatings to improve mechanical properties and barrier effectiveness.
  • Biobased Wax Dispersion: Enhances water and moisture resistance, made from hydrogenated vegetable oil.
  • Production Capability: Ready for large-scale production with cost-effective solutions.
  • Infrastructure: Equipped with three pilot coating lines, laboratory coaters, printers, and an advanced paper testing laboratory to support development and testing of novel packaging materials.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 5, having been validated in a laboratory environment. Future plans include iterative laboratory trials followed by pilot scale trials to fine-tune the coating formulations and assess scale-up feasibility.
